What I Do

“I didn’t know you did that.”

A number of years ago, I was working on a project for a client that involved sending files to another company for further processing.

After a number of those projects, that processing company asked if I would do similar projects for them.

A few weeks later, I was talking to the owner of that company and mentioned that I was in the middle of a book layout project. He said, “Oh… I didn’t know you did that. We may have a book project coming up.”

I wondered why me handling books was new to him. After all, my website at the time listed books on the main page.

But it turns out this person never visited my site. He already knew the quality of work I did on a specific type of project he often did. So in his mind, he knew what he needed to know about me.

Lesson learned on my part. Never assume customers know everything you can do for them, or that they’ve spent time exploring your site.

That story is part of what prompted this page. Another reason is that as I talk to new colleagues, outlined in Here’s A Novel Idea: Connect With Your Connections, the question of what I do comes up.

While what I offer is pretty clear if you go through all the pages on this site, I realized there was a lot of value in being able to refer people to a no-frills list of services.

Interviews

With a background in radio, I’ve interviewed hundreds if not thousands of people over a 14 year career. I also interview people for my podcasts. For authors or consultants, a promotional interview to use in their marketing can be very helpful in standing out and establishing yourself as an expert in your niche.
